Missoula, Montana

I took advantage of the July 4th holiday to get a head start on the trek across the country, but stopped in Missoula to have a mailing address and wrap up a work project. After a month on the cool, damp coast where I was still wearing jeans and jackets, Missoula's warm summer weather was a bright change. I hiked up the "M" trail in downtown Missoula on the edge of the University of Montana's campus and walked around the few blocks that make up downtown. I liked it here. It has a very livable, friendly vibe, and is close to Glacier National Park.

I took one day to drive through Glacier. They were doing work on the Going-to-the-Sun road which made for lots of bumper-to-bumper traffic, and lots of opportunities for viewing the behavior of tourists. It seems like the best way to appreciate this park, as with most national parks, is to get out into the wilderness for a multi-day backpack trip.
